Zakynthos (Zante) Town, historically known as "The Venice of the South", is the island's captial. After the earthquake and fire on August 9th 1953, the town was rebuilt preserving the Venetian and Byzantine style wherever possible.
The first part of your tour involves a guided walk through the main part of town. Visit Solomos Square, named after the poet who wrote the National Anthem of Greece. Important buildings such as the Byzantine Museum, the Church of Saint Nicholas and the Cultural Center of Zakynthos, surround the square. You will also take a stroll through the major shopping road. Our next stop is Bohali Village, located under the Venetian fortress, offering an incredible view of Zakynthos town and the outskirts as far as the eye can see. We then proceed to visit the monastery of Anafonitria, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the oldest Monastery on the island (4th century) where St. Dionysios, Patron Saint of Zakynthos served as abbot for the majority of his life until his death in 1624. St. Dionysios was well known for his healing powers and compassion and declared a saint in 1703. It is worth knowing that the monastery has recently been renovated uncovering 15th century frescos. To reach the monastery the coach will drive through the mountain villages of Zakynthos.
Your final stop will be Volimes, a tradtional mountain village famous for products such as handicrafts, rugs, embroideries, china, honey, pure olive oil, all displayed along the roadside. Free time will be given for browsing before you return to port.
